In 2019 Arena Theatre Company piloted a new initiative in Bendigo to incubate the creation of new performance works for children and young people. Some of the most highly regarded companies and creative teams from around Australia came together at Bendigo’s Capital Theatre for a week, to work on their newest projects, and to discuss their thoughts and ideas.
Now in its second year, the week-long development lab is looking for expressions of interest from local artists. Arena will provide access to studio space, and a pool of third year VCA students to help artists develop their ideas. Each day is split into two sessions, the first involves actors in the studio, and the second is used to plan, do re-writes and discuss work or network with other artists.
Two local artists who participated in the Bendigo Studio 2019, Megan Beckwith and Paris Bella, have gone on to tour their work this year which highlights how important this initiative is for developing new work. The Bendigo Studio is a powerful networking opportunity for artists and presenters that leverages influence for the sector as a whole. It also provides much needed support for independent artists and pathways for graduating theatre artists. Most importantly for children and young people, it assists in the development of a raft of new projects created especially for them.
The Bendigo Studio 2020 will be taking place from 16 – 20 March at The Capital Theatre. The list of participants will be announced mid-February.
